Chapter 9

Aiden

Another sharp shriek came from the workshop, and I put my head down against the blustering, blizzard winds. I passed by that damned shop every day to get to the barn from the farmhouse, and every day was the same. Iona and Henson spent their days attempting to extract more information from Luka, and every day he fought back. They’d brought in several other prisoners from the convoys they’d attacked over the last three weeks.

They didn’t last as long as Luka was lasting.

Everyone was on edge. I overheard Iona and Henson arguing almost every day on what their next move should be. They were waiting for a definite date for Mariana’s wedding to Reyson. At the same time, they were desperate to figure out where the goblin prisoners were being taken so they could shut down the raids and hopefully rescue all those that had been captured. Without getting certain bits of information, they were stuck at a standstill.

The plague had only gotten worse, too. More goblins fell ill every day. It was a miracle none had died yet, but several weren’t going to hold on much longer. Everything I was doing for them was only holding back the inevitable. Just like with Iona. Nothing the healers or I came up with was a cure. That resided with whoever created the plague in the first place.

I bustled into the barn shaking the snow from my coat and hair. Lanterns lit the perimeter of the area. Only one other person was in there, moving slowly between the beds of the sick.

“Teresa? That you?” The figure was hard to make out, but I thought that was her head of long, dark hair. She’d been in here as often as she could since Henry had become one of the fallen. If she wasn’t here, she was at the house watching over Orion.

If it was Teresa, she didn’t respond, just moved to the next row of cots. I hung up my coat with a worried frown and inched around the edge of patients.

“Teresa?”

The figure kept walking away from me, seeming to change each time it passed through the shadows created by the scattering of light. The long hair vanished, and the person grew taller, broader in the shoulders, almost like it was a man.

“Henson?” What was I seeing? I rubbed my eyes, wondering if I should’ve tried to get a few more hours of sleep. Not that sleep was something that came to me much anymore. Most nights if I did finally pass out from exhaustion, I’d wake up again within a few moments, seeing the faces of the sick and dying.

Seeing the face of the fae I killed.

The figure continued its slow pace around the barn, weaving between the cots. A gloved hand reached out, touching every goblin. As soon as it made contact, the goblin gasped for air then went utterly still. The barn was soon filled with a symphony of dying moans. I rushed forward intending to stop whoever was.
